Xerox's ColorQube 8870 colour printer utilises a technology called solid ink (sometimes referred to as wax). Solid ink printing was originally developed by Tektronix in 1986 who introduced their first machine (the Phaser III) in 1991, which cost a whopping $10,000 US! Luckily in 2000, Xerox saw the huge mass market potential of this technology so bought the Tektronix print division with the main purpose of refining and perfecting solid ink. So yes, even though you might never have heard of solid ink it has been around for donkey's years and is a very mature technology. It's patented by Xerox so no other manufacturer can provide this type of technology and Xerox's range of machines are aimed at businesses so you're unlikely to see it in the high street.
